A Short History of Greasepaint

Greasepaint Productions was formed in 1993. The original production team was Shane Perry, director, Alicia Haw, musical director and Julie Blanford and Julie Easter as co-choreographers, and productions were staged at Hind Leys Community College in Shepshed. The venue for our performances changed to the The Loughborough Town Hall Theatre (then known as The Charnwood Theatre) for our production of Sweet Charity.

Shane stayed with us from our first show, The Hired Man, and directed our productions of Barnum, Chess, Guys and Dolls, Sweeney Todd, Sweet Charity, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Cabaret. After this, Shane left us for a short while to take up a post as an entertainments manager on a cruise ship. Julie Easter took over the mantle of director for our productions of Me And My Girl, Hot Mikado, Let's Face The Music and Gypsy. The following two shows, 42nd Street and Godspell were directed by Julian Cound and David Hately respectively. We were then rejoined by Shane for our productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Fame, Calamity Jane, Chess, My Fair Lady and Brigadoon. Shane will be staying with us for the foreseeable future as director for our forthcoming productions of A Chorus Line and Singin' In The Rain.

Our original musical director, Alicia Haw sadly passed away in 1996 and was a real inspiration to all who knew her. She was with us through our productions of The Hired Man, Barnum, Chess, Guys and Dolls and Sweet Charity. Kate King stepped in for Sweeney Todd while Alicia was too poorly to be with us. Following in these footsteps was Milovan Jelic, who was our MD for The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and returned a couple of years later to conduct 42nd Street. David Walker took the musical helm for Cabaret, and stayed with us for our productions of Me And My Girl, Hot Mikado, Let's Face The Music and Gypsy. Our current musical director is Jonathan Orton who joined us for Godspell and has stayed with us through our productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Fame, Calamity Jane, Chess, My Fair Lady and Brigadoon. Jonathan will also be staying with us for the foreseeable future as musical director for our forthcoming productions of A Chorus Line and Singin' In The Rain.

Our original choreography team for The Hired Man was Julie Blanford and Julie Easter. Julie Easter stayed in this role through Barnum, Chess, Guys and Dolls, Sweeney Todd, Sweet Charity, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Cabaret right up to Me And My Girl. Tina Kendrick was our choreographer for Hot Mikado before Julie Easter regained the role for our productions of Let's Face The Music and Gypsy. We were joined by Cathy Birkenhead who choreographed 42nd Street and Godspell. After this, Shane Perry took on the role for Fiddler on the Roof, before Jeanette Patrick-Cooper joined us for Fame, Calamity Jane and Chess. Jeanette was then joined by Carl Edwards as co-choreographer for My Fair Lady and Brigadoon. Carl will be choreographing A Chorus Line with Jeanette returning to choreograph Singin' In The Rain.
